10x community member

August 8, 2023

It is really common to hear about the 10x Engineer in a software organization. The developer who provides multiplicative output to the organization and everyone involved in it. If there is one thing I've observed in such groups is that the contributions follow a power curve.

A small minority of the group is responsible for majority of the work and success.

Another harsh truth here is that the payout is often not according to the contributions of this power law. Where surprisingly few of the least contributing members start arguing that they should be paid equivalent to highest contributing members because equality of the members should be the goal. This ends up being a destabilizing force, leading to the self-detonation of the group.

In a web3 context, all tokens have a community of token holders. These holders have small to very large ownership of tokens and there is an understanding that the power as well as any reward should be equally distributed to the holders.

But where does this reward to be distributed come from? The effort of the 10x community members. These are the guys marketing the project, publicizing it, building tools and contributing in every way possible. Rarely are these members the largest holders, often they are the small holders enthusiastic about being a part of something.

Web3 has not figured out how to best reward such efforts and this will likely lead to the ecosystem getting drained of talent and only left with speculators. If you have a community, you know who the 10x members are - reward them, invest in them. So much to be won long term.
